Off the peninsula of Waccamaw Neck, at the Southern end of the Grand Strand, you’ll find the small barrier island Pawley’s Island. Connected to the mainland by two bridges: the North and South Causeways, Pawley’s Island has just over one hundred inhabitants, though many more tourists.
Originally home to the Waccamaw and Winyah people, these first inhabitants’ populations were devastated by European settlement, which first began in 1521. In 1791, George Washington himself toured the Grand Strand, stopping at the plantations of early settlers, the Allston. In modern times, hurricanes have changed the island, but many historical homes remain mixed with modern ones, giving the island the affectionate moniker of “arrogantly shabby.”
